How do I apply?

By using the Candidate Application Form.  A copy of this form will be sent to each program that you select, upon receipt of your application fee.  Also, it will be entered into the ORMS database.  The selections that you make on this form are not used in matching.  The selections only indicate an interest, on your part, in a selected program.  You must submit a Candidate Matching Form, on which you rank your choices, to be part of the matching process.  You must submit supporting documents to the individual programs yourself.  It is your responsibility to meet these individual program deadlines.  To gain information on how an individual program handles the application process, please contact that program.

Where can I find the programs on this site?

The Programs are listed in three ways: State, Type and School.  Each of these will take you to a different listing of the programs.  The State listing is the most detailed.  The Type listing will yield site, city and coordinator information.  The site information is linked to the detailed information in the State listing.  The Coordinator's name is linked to the e-mail address of the Coordinator.  The School list is very similar to the Type list, but it is sorted by School.

How do I submit a candidate Matching Form?

The candidate Matching Form allows you to identify yourself and rank order your choices of sites at which you wish match.  It is mandatory that you file a Matching Form, even if you are only interested in one program.  The matching form is confirmation of your final selection.  The top program is your first choice and so on down the form.

What are the deadlines?

The Optometric Residency Matching Service (ORMS) is on-line 12 months per year, but the matching season is active from October 1st to early March of the next year.  The application and application fee deadlines this year are February 1, 2008.  The deadline for submission of your Matching Form is March 7, 2008.  You must submit supporting documents to the individual programs yourself.  It is your responsibility to meet these individual program deadlines.  To gain information on how an individual program handles the application process, please contact that program.

When are the matches announced?

The match takes place in the 24-48 hours after the deadline for submission of Matching Forms.  Notification is done by e-mail in the following manner: candidates who have matched, candidates who have not matched and finally, program coordinators.  It is your responsibility to make sure that ORMS is kept informed of your e-mail address and to keep your inbox under limits set by your provider.

Applicants who so desire and do not match can have their name and demographic material included in the unmatched candidate list ("pool").  This list is distributed to program coordinators who have unfilled positions approximately 3-5 days after the match.

To be listed in the "pool," simply select "yes" in the last box on the Matching Form during the application process or notify ORMS by e-mail if you previously selected "no."  The pool is merely a way to facilitate contact between candidates who have not matched and are desirous of obtaining a residency position and program coordinators who have unfilled positions.  If you are listed in the pool, there is no obligation to do anything but to communicate with a program coordinator who has contacted you.  The communication that occurs after the match is not part of the service provided by ORMS.  All obligations with ORMS are waived upon receipt of notification of non-match status.

Can I serve as a resident if I graduated from a foreign optometry school?

The short answer to the question is that graduation from an Accreditation Council on Optometric Education is required for entrance into an accredited residency program. Most non-accredited programs have similar requirements. You need to contact individual program supervisors to ascertain the requirements for a given program.  A further hindrance would be the licensure requirement.  That is a subject that is best discussed with the state board of the state where you will need licensure.  The last statement is that to serve in a US government-funded residency, US citizenship is required.

When I select yes to the pool question am I obligated to serve at a program?
You are under no obligation whatsoever to accept a position offered after the official match.  The names of candidates who do not match (and have indicated they wish to be included in the Pool List) are made available only to programs which have unfilled positions.

Also, we post a list of "Unfilled Programs" on the ORMS webpage, which
candidates may contact.  ORMS is no longer involved after the match; we
simply make available the opportunity for unmatched candidates to be
contacted by program coordinators who have unfilled positions and vice
versa.

Are ranking selections kept confidential?

Your ranking of programs is strictly confidential; the program coordinators
do not have any knowledge about your ranking of programs.  Nor do you know their rankings.
